one year

On May 20th, Sam and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary. Our first year has been amazing. Full of many many happy days and exciting times as well as the hard lessons that are a part of every couple's first year. One thing we have definitely done is go on a LOT of dates. As you know, since we have documented many of them. So for this special occasion, Sam planned a truly wonderful date.dinner. smoke. dessert. red rock canyon activity. stay at the mayo hotel One thing we recommend to couples who are about to get married is to schedule some time to relax after the wedding. We always wished we had planned in a little bit longer to hang out at the Mayo, where we stayed for our wedding night. Jordan had a great idea to stay there for our one year. It's the historic gem of Tulsa hotels. The single biggest life changing purchase I have made in the last four months? A curling wand. Seriously. Go get one and then watch a few tutorials. You will never be the same.Guys. It's insane how good this food is. Locally sourced and handmade when you order, the food here has flavors that I didn't even know were possible. Some of the best food I have ever had.  I never ever ever order steak. It's almost guaranteed to be the most expensive item on any menu. Jordan encouraged me to get it though, because it was our anniversary. I put the money out of my mind and enjoyed probably the best piece of beef I've ever eaten. That's how he felt when I asked him to wait to take a picture before devouring his steak. We also never order dessert. So we threw that in too. Red Rock canyon has whipped cream that bears the consistency and weight of pudding. It's exquisite. The only trouble was we were so full from Smoke that we couldn't hardly eat dessert! Oh well. We had so much fun being extra fancy on this one night. We don't often get to be all dressed up and have someone valet our car. It makes you feel like a celebrity. Even though you are sleeping less than three minutes from your real home where you have to park your car yourself. The traditional one year anniversary gift is paper. I don't know what I did before Pinterest. I found this journal there and thought it would perfect. It was both meaningful and made of paper. For the final product I ended up combining the original idea with a photo journal that Elsie made. We spent the next morning at topeca recording all our thoughts about our first anniversary. With a cappucino of course. It was a great present from the greatest of women, my wife! We really loved our first year of marriage, and are super excited for the next one! And then the next 70 or 80 after that.

We love NPR. So much so that my students have asked if all I do is listen to the radio because of how often I reference stories I hear. Last week, Sam planned one of the most memorable dates we have ever been on. It involved our favorite food and one of our favorite pastimes.
dinner. chuy's
activity. the first ever live simulcast of wait wait...don't tell me!
Chuy's is an Austin original, so I grew up with this as a consistent staple of my adolescent diet. You can imagine my extreme elation when I heard that they were opening a new location in Tulsa! We frequent the Tulsa Chuy's, and always leave with (overly) full stomachs and even more full hearts.

NPR has lots of serious content. The war in Syria, politics, scientific advances, economics, etc. Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me is NPR's brilliant departure from the norm, as Peter Sagal and company make light of each week's news in a celebrity panel-listener call in quiz show. When I heard they were broadcasting live to local theaters I knew we had to catch it.
We just had so much fun. The show was so funny that I would still laugh out loud a few days later when I remembered a joke that they said

Life lately has been crazy. We haven't had a chance to post anything about the last two dates, so here they are. Both of them. In one post.
activity. watching 42
I kept dropping hints about going on a date all weekend. We were busy every single night starting on Wednesday of last week and I knew it probably wouldn't happen. During church I realized that we had all of Sunday afternoon free! I mentioned this to Sam, to which he suggested that I plan a date. So I planned this one in about ten minutes. This place is so nondescript that I bet most of you have never been here. Despite it's faded awning and broken door, Bamboo Thai is quickly becoming one of our favorite Asian places. It's much fancier on the inside and the food is incredible.
A few weeks ago I was feeling a little under the weather. I had seen Jenna eat this soup called pho when she had a cold so I thought I would give it a try too. Oh my goodness, y'all. It's amazing. In the last three weeks I think I have convinced myself that I don't feel well just so I have an excuse to order this delicious meal again. It's almost like Mexican inspired Asian soup. Which now sounds weird. But try it. You'll understand. We don't usually do a movie for a date. The exception is when there is a movie we really want to see. My favorite thing is baseball. Jordan's favorite thing is history. These two affinities collided as we caught the Sunday matinee showing of 42. This is the (mostly) true story of Jackie Robinson's historic entrance into major league baseball. On top of the baseball, history, and civil rights goodness, Harrison Ford plays a feisty old Methodist general manager and civil rights activist. There were no wookies, however, which was mildly disappointing. Jordan planned a good date.

This next weekend is our first wedding anniversary. We hope to write a couple of posts celebrating this exciting day!

movie night

Our date this weekend was pretty laid back. Sam has to fly around the world this week so a chill date was just what we needed.

breakfast. dilly deli

One of our very favorite places in Tulsa is Red Rock Canyon. If you have been reading this blog you probably noticed we aren't usually fans of chain restaurants. Although they have their place, we generally like unique locations. Red Rock Canyon is one of the exceptions. All of their food is super fresh and the atmosphere is fancy without being stuffy. When you go, splurge on an appetizer and get the calamari (it's better than ANY calamari we've ever had). And don't even look at the rest of the menu, ORDER THE ENCHILADAS. I couldn't get a picture that did them justice, but trust us. They are incredible.
Like we said, it was laid back this week. After dinner we went to a grocery store and grabbed some delicious popcorn and root beer. I had never made this kind of popcorn before but it was really fun. Put some special seasoning on it, and it's better than the movies!
I used to buy this stuff in bulk with Stead Bucks (fake University of Tulsa scholarship money). Now we have to pay real money. What's that all about?

In our last post, I laid out a multi-faceted date plan that was just an example of what you can do on dates. But Jordan liked the idea of warming up blankets so much that I thought it might be a good idea to actually use that plan!
It was so fun to snuggle up on the couch and introduce Sam to one of the greatest movies ever made.

I had never seen Ferris Beuller's Day Off all the way through. It may be the most inspiring movie I have ever seen. Warming our blankets was a fleeting pleasure, but it's also a cheap way to make your movie watching special!
Every time I wear these pants, my students make fun of me. One day bright pink pants will be mainstream. Here's hoping it's soon. Our waiter said it was the first time he'd seen someone wear pink pants in the restaurant.

The next morning we went to Dilly Deli for breakfast. Since we hardly ever go out for breakfast I thought we should share this Tulsa treasure. It's called a deli but it's much more. It has everything you could need: mismatched chairs, a bocce ball court, a cereal bar, and cinnamon rolls the size of your head. Literally. And the breakfast tacos are great too.

Cream cheese icing makes this meal. Even if you are a large man, you'll need to enlist a friend to eat the whole thing.
Enjoy your week! Next week I'm planning the date. Feel free to send ideas my way!

birthday celebrations

Sam's birthday was this Saturday. We didn't get the chance to go on a traditional date, but we did have a lot of fun celebrating 23! Far too many restaurants were visited to talk about each one, so I picked out a couple notable excursions.

Thursday night my parents and I gave Sam his birthday present. I think it's safe to say he was pretty excited.
First two albums I own -- The Smiths' "The Queen is Dead" and The Decemberists' "Picaresque." Perfect choices, In-Laws!

dinner. smoke.
activity. the aquarium and philbrook museum

On Saturday, Sam's parents came into town to celebrate his day with us! We had a ton of fun going to the Oklahoma Aquarium.

I concluded that fish are weird.
Sam had been wanting to visit this place for four years and we finally made it! It's completely worth the trip. I learned so much about aquatic beings and the shark tunnel was amazing.
We don't have a picture, but google "african mudskipper" if you want to see my favorite. It looks like a grumpy man.

After lunch we ventured to Philbrook Museum of Art in Midtown Tulsa. It was once known as Villa Philbrook, the home of oil maven Waite Phillips and his family. Now it houses amazing art from all around the world. Every second Saturday of the month the museum has free admission.

When it's not an frigid and rainy day, the grounds of Philbrook are what draws most attention. On this day, however, I was more than content to peer out from a warm room.

As we walked around the museum, Sam's mom had everyone taking stock of what art we would like to take home, if given the option. I probably took the game too seriously.
You can't tell but I'm translating the latin on the frame. Old habits die hard; thanks, Mr. Bogan. Hopefully you will continue to read the rest of the post despite my very nerdy confession. I promise 1/2 of the people writing this blog are really cool.

Matching sock buns.

The verdict? Sam wanted that giant modern art painting.
The texture is amazing and the colors just kind of smack you in the face.

And I will gladly take this captivating portrait of Greta Garbo by George Hurrell when the museum is done with it. I still can't take my eyes off of the photo. Now, off to watch Ninotchka, where I will fall more in love with this actress.

It was a great birthday weekend, thanks to all our friends and family! Thanks so much to the Moyers' and the Graves's for helping to make my birthday special!
